Supermarket Belongs to the Community

Supermarket belongs to the community. While Chef has the responsibility to keep it running and be stewards of its functionality, what it does and how it works is driven by the community. The chef/supermarket repository will continue to be where development of the Supermarket application takes place. Come be part of shaping the direction of Supermarket by opening issues and pull requests or by joining us on the Chef Mailing List.

Test Cookbook

Description

Cookbook used to test Chef behaviors.

It is used as a template to create new cookbooks as it includes a complete
configuration to test it in kitchen with docker and multi-nodes. In this
cookbook, multi-nodes are represented by different platform.

It is also used to test the following docker images which can run systemd
without being privileged:

  • sbernard/centos-systemd-kitchen
  • sbernard/arch-systemd-kitchen
  • sbernard/debian-systemd-kitchen

Finally, this project has a very generic [.gitlab-ci.yml](.gitlab-ci.yml) used
by every Chef Platform cookbooks. It used
for Continuous Integration but also for releasing on
Chef Supermarket. See Usage for more
information.

Requirements

Cookbooks and gems

Declared in [metadata.rb](metadata.rb) and in [Gemfile](Gemfile).

Platforms

A systemd managed distribution:

  • RHEL Family 7, tested on Centos
  • ArchLinux
  • Debian 8

Usage

Releasing a cookbook

In [.gitlab-ci.yml](.gitlab-ci.yml), three stages are dedicated to release a
cookbook on Chef Supermarket:

  • release (git release : checking and taging)
  • share (sharing the new release on supermarket)
  • next (preparing the next version)

Conditions for a project to use this release management:

  • a deploy key with write allowed and its private key defined in "DEPLOY_PRIVATE_KEY" variable
  • Chef Supermarket user defined in "CHEF_USER" and private key in "CHEF_KEY"

Conditions for a commit to trigger a release:

  • be named 'chore: release VERSION' where VERSION is defined in metadata
  • only diff should be on [CHANGELOG.md](CHANGELOG.md)
  • [CHANGELOG.md](CHANGELOG.md) should contain a VERSION section

Then if every tests pass, the CI will tag the commit with the version and
share it on Supermarket. Finally, it will update the VERSION in metadata and
commit it under the description 'chore: start NEXT_VERSION'.

You can see an example of release commit on any tag in this repository.

BEWARE: once a version is shared on Supermarket, it is not possible to cancel
or overwrite it!

Test

This cookbook is fully tested through the installation of a working cluster in
docker hosts. This uses kitchen, docker and some monkey-patching.

For more information, see [.kitchen.yml](.kitchen.yml) and [test](test)
directory.

Attributes

Configuration is done by overriding default attributes. All configuration keys
have a default defined in [attributes/default.rb](attributes/default.rb).
Please read it to have a comprehensive view of what and how you can configure
this cookbook behavior.

Recipes

default

Run systemctl to check if it works.

Resources/Providers

None.

Changelog

Available in [CHANGELOG.md](CHANGELOG.md).
