Resources
The following resources are provided:
Resource Parameter Value - Notes
Parameter values can generally be passed as the expected format type for the parameter they configure, for example integers for number fields and strings for text parameters.
There are some exceptions to this rule such as the use-dns()
parameter which accepts either yes, no or persist_only
. In this case persist_only
options is not a string
but a symbol and must be passed as such else it will be quoted as per normal strings and syslog-ng will fail with a configuration error.
config_global
Generates the syslog-ng.conf
file from node attributes containing the global configuration.

Libraries
_common | destination | filter | rewrite | source
Provides a set of helper methods to generate syslog-ng configuration stanzas, due to the variety and format they can be complex to construct so most of the
heavy lifting is done by the libraries.
install
SyslogNg::InstallHelpers.installed_version_get
Returns the current installed version as a float to be used for the version directive in the global configuration file.
SyslogNg::InstallHelpers.repo_get_packages
Returns an array of the packages to install from the relevant package manager.
SyslogNg::InstallHelpers.installed_get_packages
Returns an array of install syslog-ng packages to remove as part of an uninstall.
Usage
This cookbook contains no recipes and only provides resources to be directly used or wrapped in a wrapper cookbook.
Resources
config_global Usage
All properties are optional and by default the settings in the generated global configuration will be retrieved from node attributes, any properties can be overridden by changing the attributes, specifying a different attribute or providing a value to the relevant resource property.
The default node attributes for the global configuration generate a Redhat-style default syslog setup.
Example 1 - Using node attributes
syslog_ng_config_global '/etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf' do action :create end
destination Usage
Generates a syslog-ng destination configuration statement.
Some destination drivers accept a non-named parameter which is generally a path (the file and pipe driver accept a path) so an additional path property is provided alongside the parameters.
Example 1
syslog_ng_destination 'd_test' do driver 'file' path '/var/log/test.log' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
destination d_test {
file("/var/log/test.log");
};
Example 2
syslog_ng_destination 'd_test_params' do driver 'file' path '/var/log/test/test_params.log' parameters( 'flush_lines' => 10, 'create-dirs' => 'yes' ) notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
destination d_test_params { file("/var/log/test/test_params.log" flush_lines(10) create-dirs(yes)); };
filter Usage
Generates a syslog-ng filter configuration statement.
Due to the large amount of possible combinations of Boolean operators and containers to which can be applied in a filter, this resource has a reasonably complex Hash structure and despite trying to break this as much as possible in testing, this library will very likely have some bugs in it.
In the case of the library being unable to generate a filter there is the option of giving the correctly formatted filter as a String or as an Array of String, in this case it is up to the implementer to ensure that it is a correctly formatted filter statement for syslog-ng.
Example 1 - Contained OR'd common filters
Hash:
syslog_ng_filter 'f_test' do parameters( 'container' => { 'operator' => 'or', 'facility' => %w(mail authpriv cron), } ) action :create end
Generates:
filter f_test { (facility(mail) or facility(authpriv) or facility(cron)); };
Example 2 - Multiple contained groups with differing operators
Hash:
syslog_ng_filter 'f_test_contained' do parameters( 'container_outside' => { 'operator' => 'and', 'container_1' => { 'facility' => 'mail', }, 'container_2' => { 'operator' => 'or', 'facility' => %w(cron authpriv), }, } ) action :create end
Generates:
filter f_test_contained { ((facility(mail)) and (facility(cron) or facility(authpriv))); };
Example 3 - Multiple of the same filter given as an Array
- syslog-ng implicitly takes multiple filters within a contained group without a Boolean operator as being
and
'd so the library explicitly specifies it if no other operator has been given.
syslog_ng_filter 'f_test_array_and' do parameters( 'container' => { 'facility' => %w(mail authpriv cron), } ) action :create end
Generates:
filter f_test_array { (facility(mail) and facility(authpriv) and facility(cron)); };
- The same with an
or
operator specified
syslog_ng_filter 'f_test_array_or' do parameters( 'container' => { 'operator' => 'or', 'facility' => %w(mail authpriv cron), } ) action :create end
Generates:
filter f_test_array_or { (facility(mail) or facility(authpriv) or facility(cron)); };
Example 4 - Pass a raw filter String or Array
syslog_ng_filter 'f_test_raw_string' do parameters 'host("example") and match("deny" value("MESSAGE"))' action :create end
Generates:
filter f_test_raw_string { host("example") and match("deny" value("MESSAGE")); };
- An Array
syslog_ng_filter 'f_test_raw_string_array' do parameters ['host("example1")', 'or host("example2")', 'or (host("example3") and not match("test" value("NOT_ME_MESSAGE")))'] action :create end
Generates:
filter f_test_raw_string_array { host("example1") or host("example2") or (host("example3") and not match("test" value("NOT_ME_MESSAGE"))); };
install Usage
There following installation methods are available:
distro
latest
githead
The latest installation method is available to current Redhat (7+), Fedora (28+) and Debian distributions and provide up-to-dates versions that aren't in the distribution repositories. The githead method is only available to Redhat and Fedora distributions as a build of the latest code from the syslog-ng repository.
By default the resource will remove rsyslog which is the default syslog daemon on the supported distros, if this is set to false
then the rsyslog service will just be disabled instead. Some package managers will remove rsyslog anyway when installing syslog-ng so even if this set to false
rsyslog can still be removed.
The syslog_ng_install
resource does not require a name property.
Distribution repository package installation
syslog_ng_install '' do action :install end
COPR repository package installation
syslog_ng_install '' do package_source 'package_copr' action :install end
Uninstall
syslog_ng_install '' do action :remove end
log Usage
Generates a syslog-ng log configuration statement.
A log statement is the last part of a combination of source
, filter
and destination
resources to create a completed log configuration with syslog-ng. Multiple source, filter and destination elements can be passed to the resource as a String Array.
The resource does not presently support embedded log statements, this will be added as a future development.
Example 1 - Basic Log
syslog_ng_log 'l_test' do source 's_test' filter 'f_test' destination 'd_test' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
log { source(s_test); filter(f_test); destination(d_test); };
Example 2 - Contained Log
syslog_ng_log 'l_test_embedded' do source( [ 'tcp' => { 'parameters' => { 'ip' => '127.0.0.1', 'port' => '5516', }, }, 'udp' => { 'parameters' => { 'ip' => '127.0.0.1', 'port' => '5516', }, }, ] ) filter( 'container_outside' => { 'operator' => 'and', 'container_1' => { 'facility' => 'mail', }, 'container_2' => { 'operator' => 'or', 'facility' => %w(cron authpriv), }, } ) destination( [ { 'file' => { 'path' => '/var/log/embedded_test/test_file_1.log', 'parameters' => { 'flush_lines' => 10, 'create-dirs' => 'yes', }, }, }, { 'file' => { 'path' => '/var/log/embedded_test/test_file_2.log', 'parameters' => { 'flush_lines' => 100, 'create-dirs' => 'yes', }, }, }, ] ) notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Log - l_test_embedded log { source { tcp(ip(127.0.0.1) port("5516")); }; source { udp(ip(127.0.0.1) port("5516")); }; filter { ((facility(mail)) and (facility(cron) or facility(authpriv))) }; destination { file("/var/log/embedded_test/test_file_1.log" flush_lines(10) create-dirs(yes)); }; destination { file("/var/log/embedded_test/test_file_2.log" flush_lines(100) create-dirs(yes)); }; };
Example 3 - Log Junction/Channels
syslog_ng_log 'l_test_junction' do source( [ 'tcp' => { 'parameters' => { 'ip' => '127.0.0.1', 'port' => '5520', 'flags' => 'no-parse', }, }, ] ) destination( [ { 'file' => { 'path' => '/var/log/junction_test/test_file_junction.log', 'parameters' => { 'flush_lines' => 10, 'create-dirs' => 'yes', }, }, }, ] ) junction( [ { 'filter' => 'f_test', 'parser' => { 'parser' => 'syslog-parser', }, }, { 'filter' => 'f_test_contained', }, ] ) notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Log - l_test_junction log { source { tcp(ip(127.0.0.1) port("5520") flags("no-parse")); }; junction { channel { filter(f_test); parser { syslog-parser( ); }; }; channel { filter(f_test_contained); }; }; destination { file("/var/log/junction_test/test_file_junction.log" flush_lines(10) create-dirs(yes)); }; };
parser Usage
Generates a syslog-ng parser configuration statement.
Example 1 - CSV Parser
syslog_ng_parser 'p_csv_parser' do parser 'csv-parser' parser_options 'columns' => '"HOSTNAME.NAME", "HOSTNAME.ID"', 'delimiters' => '"-"', 'flags' => 'escape-none', 'template' => '"${HOST}"' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Parser - p_csv_parser parser p_csv_parser { csv-parser( columns("HOSTNAME.NAME", "HOSTNAME.ID") delimiters("-") flags(escape-none) template("${HOST}") ); };
Example 2 - iptables Parser
syslog_ng_parser 'p_iptables_parser' do parser 'iptables-parser' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Parser - p_iptables_parser
parser p_iptables_parser {
iptables-parser(
);
};
Example 3 - JSON Parser
syslog_ng_parser 'p_json_parser' do parser 'json-parser' parser_options 'prefix' => '".json."', 'marker' => '"@json:"' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Parser - p_json_parser parser p_json_parser { json-parser( prefix(".json.") marker("@json:") ); };
rewrite Usage
Generates a syslog-ng rewrite configuration statement.
Example 1 - Substitute string IP
with IP-Address
in MESSAGE field
syslog_ng_rewrite 'r_test_ip' do function 'subst' match 'IP' replacement 'IP-Address' value 'MESSAGE' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Rewrite - r_test_ip rewrite r_test_ip { subst("IP", "IP-Address", value("MESSAGE")); };
Example 2 - Set the HOST field to myhost
syslog_ng_rewrite 'r_test_set' do function 'set' replacement 'myhost' value 'HOST' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Rewrite - r_test_set rewrite r_test_set { set("myhost", value("HOST")); };
Example 3 - Set the HOST field to $MESSAGE suffix
with additional options
syslog_ng_rewrite 'r_test_set_additional' do function 'set' replacement '$MESSAGE suffix' value 'HOST' additional_options 'on-error' => 'fallback-to-string' notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Rewrite - r_test_set_additional rewrite r_test_set_additional { set("$MESSAGE suffix", value("HOST") on-error("fallback-to-string")); };
Example 4 - Set tags

Generates:
# Rewrite - r_test_set_tag rewrite r_test_set_tag { set-tag("tag-to-add-1"); };
Example 5 - Multiple rewrite operations
syslog_ng_rewrite 'r_test_multiple' do configuration( [ { 'function' => 'set-tag' 'tags' => 'tag-to-add-1' }, { 'function' => 'clear-tag', 'tags' => 'tag-to-clear-1' }, { 'function' => 'groupset', 'field' => 'myhost', 'values' => %w(HOST FULLHOST) }, ] ) notifies :run, 'execute[syslog-ng-config-test]', :delayed notifies :reload, 'service[syslog-ng]', :delayed action :create end
Generates:
# Rewrite - r_test_multiple rewrite r_test_multiple { set-tag("tag-to-add-1"); clear-tag("tag-to-clear-1"); groupset("myhost", values("HOST", "FULLHOST")); };
source Usage
Generates a syslog-ng source configuration statement.
